Determining Peer Violence in High Schools and Developing a School Based Prevention Program

Purpose of the Project

Although research has been done in Turkey over the last years, these were not sufficient to represent the whole country and they were not comprehensive enough to give a clear picture about the extent of violent behavior and detailed information about where children are mainly bullied, what they are feeling, what is their reaction when they face violence, from whom they get support when they face violence, how much they are feeling safe in school, what type of myths about bullying they have, how serious problem they perceive violence is in their schools etc.

This project aims to fill the gap by implementing the following project activities:

  1. Collecting data about school violence and bullying behavior in 12 regions (NUTS 1) so to obtain the picture of the whole country.
  2. Developing a violence prevention and intervention program.
  3. Determining the effect of the violence prevention and intervention program. Two experiments and two control groups are planned including one general and one vocational high school in each group. Pre-test and post-test measurements will be calculated during the process of impact analysis of the program application.
  4. Writing of four different books for students, teachers, school administrators and families on how to prevent school violence.
  5. Developing a web site about school violence and bullying where to offer scientific information for students, teachers, school counselors, school principals, parents and the general public in Turkey.

Stages of the Project

  • 1st Stage: Collecting data for about 9,560 students, 180 teachers and 60 school administrators in 12 provinces in NUTS 1 regions in Turkey.
  • 2nd Stage: Writing the four different books for students, teachers, school administrators and families on how to prevent school violence.
  • 3rd Stage: Developing school violence prevention and intervention program based on empirical data and contemporary theoretical approaches.
  • 4th Stage: Determining the efficiency of the program. Applications in experimental schools are going to be conducted and impact analysis is to be performed.
